TelASIC achieves milestone in analog industry: widest instantaneous bandwidth for direct conversion of RF signals
El Segundo, CA (February 17, 2004) TelASIC Communications, Inc., a mixed-signal IC company that offers the world's highest performance ADC, DAC and digital pre-distortion linearizer chips, today demonstrated an unprecedented level of performance in the analog industry. Showcasing data converter technology at the International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) in San Francisco, TelASIC presented a Quantizer/DAC clocking rate of over 40 GHz with input RF signals up to 33 GHz. The demonstration illustrated the performance potential of TelASIC's Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) and Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) architecture and design techniques.
"In high volume RF applications, where low cost and high integration are key to marketability, the designers’ goal is to digitize the RF signal as early as possible in the receiver chain while keeping the signal in the digital domain and converting to the analog domain as late as possible for the transmitter. By doing this, designers can eliminate the chains of analog components used in traditional multi-stage IF conversion and fully exploit the low-cost economics and high integration capabilities of digital design infrastructure," said Don Devendorf, CTO at TelASIC. "The roadblock today is the lack of technology for direct sampling at high frequency. Our demonstration of 40 GSPS sampling is an important milestone in the analog industry to achieve the goal of direct conversion."
In the paper presented at the ISSCC, the TelASIC team describes the details of a 3-bit ADC-DAC chip that demonstrated full functionality to sample at >40 GSPS, with the highest data conversion speed reported in the industry to date. The team also explains one of the most challenging tasks in designing the chip: the ability to route signals at a 40 GHz clock rate on chip, while taking into account the parasitic interconnect elements that degrade the signal.
